Traditionally, Saint Barbara is commemorated in Reichersdorf at the beginning of December. Something special was waiting for the visitors this year.
The renovated ground stable was consecrated, and a stone figure of St. Barbara found its place again in the underground passage.
As reported, part of the clay stable in Reichersdorf in the municipality of Irschenberg collapsed in the summer of this year. The volunteers then got together and actively helped with the restoration. The collapsed section has been restored with a lot of manual work over the last few weeks and is now accessible again. During this restoration work, a stone figure of Barbara was added to the niche provided.
Barbara figure as a duplicate of the original tuff stone figure
This Barbara figure is a replica of the original tuff stone figure, which has been in the Miesbach local history museum for over 100 years. It is considered extremely valuable due to its age and uniqueness. The figure was probably donated in 1656 by Wolf Veith Graf zu Hohenwaldeck.
On Sunday this figure was the focus of the family service. The legend of st. Barbara was vividly told, and many children laid branches in her honor. After the service, the stone figure was placed in the niche provided in the ground stable.Father Ignatius of the Teutonic Order blessed it and also the renovated part of the land stable.
explore and explain an archaeological monument
After the service, many visitors took the opportunity to explore the earthen monument and also visited the Church of all Saints above it. Under the expert guidance of Sepp Hatzl from the Culture and History support Society in Weyarn, there was a lot of engaging background details to learn. District architect Christian Boiger, district town administrator Markus Bernlochner, Weyarn mayor Leonhard Wöhr and Irschenberg counterpart klaus Meixner also took part.
Thanks to the volunteers
Meixner thanked everyone for the many hours he worked as a volunteer. But he also pointed out the challenges of restoring an archaeological monument. “The numerous agreements with the various authorities take a lot of time. And then, above all, you need people who can tackle it and implement it. And they found each other here in Reichersdorf.God bless you for that.” This voluntary effort was then applauded.
Kathleen Ellmeier, who represents the Free Voters of Reichersdorf in the local council, was also pleased with the many visitors.”It was a bit like the Brotherhood of Barbara for almost 500 years in Reichersdorf,” she said. “There were four church services for the Feast of Saint Barbara, and each was well attended today.” We ended the beautiful winter day with punch and mulled wine.
