Sogang University Mary Hall Grand Theater, 27th to 29th
Singer Ryu Ga-yang’s mono pansori performance ‘Yeolryeol Chunhyang – Burning to Shine’ will be performed on the stage at the Sogang university Mary hall Grand Theater in Mapo-gu, Seoul for three days from the 27th to the 29th. we meet the audience again after 3 years.
‘Ryeolryeolchunhyang’ is Liu Ga-yang’s representative work and has received great response from audiences through performances in 2019 and 2021 sence its premiere in 2018. Ryu Ga-yang re-adapted the pansori version, ‘Boseongsori Chunhyangga’, which takes 7 hours to complete, incorporating her own philosophy. Boseongsori refers to a school of Pansori with a unique singing style.
In this performance,Chunhyang is not portrayed as a woman simply waiting for love,but as an enterprising person who achieves and protects her own life and love.
Musically, based on the tradition of pansori, it presents a richer sound by combining tradition and modernity, including piano, double bass, guitar, taepyeongso, flute, saenghwang, and percussion instruments. Ji-hoon Song on piano, Min-wang Hwang on percussion, Jae-ha Lee on bass, and guitar. Kim Jae-woo plays the role, and Oh Cho-rong plays the piri and saenghwang.
An official from Birosopansori, a production company, said, “This is a work that stands out with singer Ryu Ga-yang’s delicate acting skills
and sincere sound,” and added, “audiences will be able to revive the passion in their hearts through the tenacious Chunhyang.”

Ryu Ga-yang: Thank you for having me! For me, ‘Ryeolryeolchunhyang’ is not just a performance; it’s a reflection of my journey as an artist and as a woman. It’s an opportunity to reimagine Chunhyang’s story—she’s not just waiting for love; she’s actively shaping her own destiny and finding empowerment along the way.
Editor: That’s an inspiring perspective! The pansori you’ve adapted, ‘Boseongsori Chunhyangga’, has roots that trace back to a traditional performance lasting over seven hours. How did you go about re-adapting such a monumental work?
Ryu Ga-yang: Ah, yes! Adapting ‘Boseongsori Chunhyangga’ was both a challenge and a joy. I took elements of the traditional style and infused them with my own philosophy and interpretation. It was crucial to me to maintain the essence of the original while also making it accessible and relatable to contemporary audiences.
Editor: It’s fantastic to hear how you balance tradition with modern interpretation. Can you elaborate on the central themes that emerge through your rendition of Chunhyang’s character?
Ryu Ga-yang: Absolutely! In traditional interpretations, Chunhyang frequently enough appears passive, but I wanted to reshape her narrative. I portray her as a dynamic individual who is proactive in her choices. The themes of independence,self-determination,and resilience come through strongly in this adaptation,challenging the audience to think about love and agency in their own lives.
Editor: That’s a powerful shift! Your performances have previously received positive responses in 2019 and 2021.After a three-year hiatus, what do you hope the audience takes away from this latest installment?
Ryu Ga-yang: I really hope to connect with the audience on an emotional level. After the pandemic, people have been through so much. I want them to feel that resonate energy of hope and empowerment that Chunhyang embodies. it’s about celebrating life and love,even amidst challenges.
Editor: it sounds like your performance will be both moving and thought-provoking! The show runs from the 27th to the 29th at Sogang University Mary Hall Grand Theater in Seoul. What can attendees expect in terms of the visual and auditory experience?
ryu Ga-yang: I’ve collaborated with talented set designers and musicians to create an immersive environment. The visuals will complement the narrative, incorporating elements that represent both the traditional feel of pansori and the innovative aspects of my adaptation.The music will also include live performances, enhancing the emotion behind each scene.
