What inspired ⁢Edward⁣ Lee to create the documentary ‌”Finding Edward Lee”?

Interview: Time.news Editor Meets Chef Edward Lee

Time.news Editor: Welcome, Edward. It’s a pleasure⁢ to have you here. Your documentary ”Finding Edward Lee” ‍has generated quite a buzz. Can you tell us what prompted you to‌ create this intimate portrayal of your life?

Edward Lee:⁢ Thank you for⁤ having me! The documentary was ‌really a labor of ‌love. I wanted to share a‍ side of ‍me that goes beyond the kitchen—my family, my ⁤struggles, and my values. People often see the chef on TV, but this was an opportunity to showcase my daily life and the‍ people who‌ inspire me.

Time.news Editor:‍ It sounds ⁤like⁢ the documentary reveals a different dimension ⁢of⁤ you. We often think of celebrity chefs as larger-than-life figures, but⁣ your⁤ story seems to emphasize your warmth and approachability.

Edward Lee: Absolutely. I ‍think that’s what sets “Finding ‍Edward Lee”⁣ apart. While I ⁣take my‌ profession seriously, I’m also just ⁢a husband, father, and a guy⁢ who loves cooking. The documentary captures moments ⁤with my ⁤wife,Dianne, and ⁣our daughter,Arden, who often call me ‍out on my ‘chef’ persona. ⁣It highlights the blend of the professional and the personal.

Time.news⁢ Editor: In Part 1, we see you managing a hectic daily routine—from⁢ grocery shopping at 7 a.m. to⁣ preparing for ⁣service at your new restaurant, Sia. How ⁣do you⁢ maintain that balance between your professional and personal life?

Edward Lee: It’s challenging! I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years, and while I have my routines, I’m always adjusting. My family ⁢keeps me grounded, reminding me what truly matters. And with Sia,I’m excited⁣ to bring Korean fine dining to Washington,D.C. While it’s a meaningful challenge, ⁣the creative process‌ keeps me fueled.

Time.news editor: Sia sounds incredible! Your menu ‍combines innovative twists on‌ traditional⁤ Korean dishes, like the tuna bibimbap with quail eggs ⁣and ‍caviar.⁤ Can you tell us how⁤ your cultural background influences your‌ cooking?

Edward Lee: ‍My Korean heritage is⁤ a vital part of‌ my identity ⁤and culinary style. ⁤I⁤ love taking traditional flavors and presenting them in new, exciting⁢ ways. The ⁢fusion of cultures in‍ food⁣ is something I really cherish—it’s a way for me to connect with my roots while still being innovative.⁤

Time.news Editor: Beyond the professional achievements, ⁤you’ve also won ⁢Iron Chef America and received James Beard award nominations. Do accolades weigh heavily on‍ you, ⁣or do you see them as ⁢inspirational?

Edward Lee: Awards are certainly validation‌ of hard work, ⁣but they don’t⁤ define me. What’s more meaningful is the impact I can⁤ have on others through my work and my family. ‍It’s how I⁤ leave a legacy—teaching Arden about cooking and sharing our‌ culture is what I cherish most. ⁢

Time.news Editor:⁢ In Part‌ 2 of the documentary, we get to see more of your family dynamics. How does Dianne feel ‍about being featured so prominently?

Edward Lee: She was a⁤ bit ⁤hesitant at first. Living with a chef has its challenges! dianne shares⁤ aspects of our lives that not everyone sees, including the sacrifices we make. She’s truly my better half, and getting her perspective adds richness to the story.

Time.news Editor: Speaking ⁢of your family, ⁢it sounds like there are humorous moments, like Dianne calling ‌you “not an‌ easy husband.” What do you think your family would say is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness?

Edward Lee: My greatest strength might be my passion for food and cooking. ⁢I also bring a lot of energy to the ⁤table. ‌On the flip⁤ side, I can be too intense and focused on my work, wich sometimes⁣ makes me oblivious to what my family needs. I’m constantly working to strike that balance.

Time.news⁣ Editor: As a final question, Edward, what is‍ one takeaway you hope ‌viewers will gain from “Finding Edward Lee”?

Edward lee: I hope viewers ⁣see the ⁤humanity behind the chef. The ⁣culinary world is intense and exhilarating, ⁣but ⁣ultimately, it’s the stories, connections,⁢ and ‍love that nourish us.‍ I want ‍people to understand that food is ⁣a vehicle for sharing culture, moments, and memories.

Time.news editor:⁢ Thank you,‌ Edward. ‍We look forward to more insights from ‌both you and your documentary. Best of luck with Sia and‍ the continuing journey in your culinary career!
