“The joint efforts of China and Africa can generate new momentum for progress on the continent,” the UN chief was quoted as saying by the press service of the international organization.
Mr. Guterres, who was speaking at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, which is being held from September 4 to 6 in Beijing, expressed the world organization’s support for this partnership which constitutes, according to him, a pillar of South-South cooperation.
He recalled that China is already Africa’s long-standing and most important trading partner, noting that the Asian giant’s “remarkable” record in development, notably in the eradication of poverty, gives it a “rich experience and great expertise”.
“The China-Africa partnership can drive the renewable energy revolution. It can serve as a catalyst for key transitions in the areas of food systems and digital connectivity,” said the senior UN official.
Created in October 2000 in Beijing, FOCAC is the oldest regional forum in China. the mechanism gained prominence in 2006, when Beijing announced the creation of a five billion dollar China-Africa development fund.
The programme for the 2024 edition of FOCAC includes high-level meetings on state governance,industrialization and agricultural modernization,peace and security,as well as quality cooperation within the framework of the the Belt and Road Initiative.
