Captain julius Magnusson’s penalty goal was decisive.
Fredrikstad made an impressive comeback season in the Eliteserien by finishing sixth.
Qualified for the European League
Neither Molde nor FFK managed to secure a place in the European Cup qualification through league play. This placed particular pressure on Molde, who in recent years have been regular participants in either the European League or the Conference League.
After 120 scoreless minutes, the cup final had to be decided by a penalty shootout. There, Fredrikstad players kept their heads cooler, while Molde fell behind when Eirik Haugan missed the first penalty.
fredrikstad won the drama 5-4.
Never before has a cup final ended 0-0 after 120 minutes. That streak was broken on Saturday. In the overtime of the second extra period, Henrik Skogvold could have been FFK’s great hero, but his header hit the crossbar.
The triumph in the capital gives FFK a place in the 3rd qualifying round for the European League. This provides a good opportunity for European Cup football in “Plankebyen” next year.
– A pity for him
Five minutes before the end, Molde created a triple chance after a high interception. The white-shirted goalkeeper Jonathan Fischer stood in the way of the first two attempts, before the last attempt was stopped by the FFK defense.
The first half was characterized by tough tackles and high temperatures. A plethora of chances were missing in the first 45 minutes. There was one particular incident between Morten Bjørlo and Martin Linnes that prompted a reaction from the latter. TV footage showed that the FFK profile’s arm hit the Molde defender’s delicate parts.
– I hope for his sake that it doesn’t come out on TV what he is doing. It’s a pity for him. It’s childish and hopeless, so we hope it was in the heat of the game, Linnes told TV 2.
– I did touch him in a certain area, but that’s just something that happens, claimed
Even in the second half, chances were scarce at Ullevaal Stadium. Thus, extra time was required. There were still no goals scored there.
– Haven’t consulted a psychologist
A poor season finish cost Molde a spot among the top four in the Eliteserien. This meant there was even more at stake for Erling Moe’s team in pursuit of qualification for the European League next season.
– If you can’t handle being in this, then you shoudl find something else to do. I haven’t consulted a new psychologist, if that’s what you’re wondering. What’s crucial is that we don’t start doubting, and that we stick with what we’ve done for a long time. I have no belief in a complete renovation, said Molde manager Erling Moe to NRK before the cup final.
Last year, Molde won the cup final against Bodø/Glimt 1-0 after a late goal by Fredrik Gulbrandsen. Again, the blue shirts ended up outside the European spots in the league, but saved qualification for the European League with the triumph at Ullevaal.
– Really back on the map
Molde defeated Eide/Omegn, Strindheim, Hødd, Sarpsborg, Lillestrøm, and Sandnes Ulf on their way to Ullevaal. FFK took care of Drøbak/Frogn, Eik Tønsberg, Rosenborg, Raufoss, Vålerenga, and KFUM oslo on their journey to the cup final.
FFK has a total of eleven cup titles to their name. Only Odd and Rosenborg have more.
– We just have to love and enjoy this. Fredrikstad is truly back on the map. It’s absolutely wonderful to stand here. We must respect Molde’s strengths, and we will get chances with the ball here, said FFK coach Andreas Hagen to NRK before kick-off.
