Overwatch 2 Beta has a fixed release date, as confirmed during the jittery developers’ livestream.
The highly anticipated beta will be released on April 26 for PC players only, though Blizzard commercial leader John Spector confirmed that the team is “working to include future console players.” According to the live stream, which also included game director Aaron Keeler and lead designer Jeff Goodman, the goal of the April beta is to bring players with a wide range of abilities from a variety of regions.
The Watch 2 Alpha is currently active, although it includes only Blizzard employees, professional Overwatch League players, and a few other select players. The development team already received heaps of feedback about the new game from Alpha, which destroyed servers almost instantly according to Spector.
Overwatch 2 is supposed to bring serious changes to the original formula, reduce the squad from five players to six, remake heroes (Doomfist is now a tank, guys), and add new maps – all of which it claims Goodman has caused “mass chaos”. According to Keller, Overwatch 2 is faster than the original game, with more room to allow players to move around on maps and avoid choke points.
The live stream showed some funny things about how the alpha was going, like how all of the new hero Sojourn’s journey lines were accidentally left behind and how tank hero Winston was too old to get through an opening in one of the new maps. Both of these issues have since been fixed, and the developer team has clarified that the “scope of feedback” provided by the select database of alpha payers is critical to how changes are made to Overwatch 2. It all comes after a long time. A period of silence from Blizzard regarding Overwatch 2, which the team hacked last week only to confirm that the beta will start next month.
PC players can sign up for the Overwatch 2 Beta here, console players can, well they can wait. I’m sorry.
