Victor Pelevin has not given interviews or appeared in public for almost 20 years, maintaining a one-sided correspondence relationship with readers: once a year another volume of 400-500 pages is published. In recent years, the writer has become interested in (anti)science fiction and is developing a series on cyberpunk dystopia. The new novel “Cool,” which goes on sale in a week, continues this series. Interestingly, the “Brave New World” according to Pelevin is not much different from the political and mythological structure of the universe, which he also described in his cult book ”Generation P” (1999).
What themes are commonly explored in Victor Pelevin’s works compared to other contemporary authors?
Q&A wiht Time.news Editor and Victor Pelevin Expert
Editor (Time.news): Thank you for joining us today to discuss the fascinating world of Victor Pelevin, particularly as he is set to release his new novel “Cool.” After nearly 20 years of silence, what do you think motivated him to finally present this new work?
Expert: victor Pelevin has always been a complex figure in Russian literature, and his long hiatus from public life adds to the intrigue surrounding his work. I believe that his decision to resurface with “Cool” aligns with a deepened exploration of themes he has been developing over the years, particularly in the realms of (anti)science fiction and cyberpunk dystopia. This genre allows him to examine the socio-political structures that have evolved since his earlier works, such as “Generation P.”
Editor: Speaking of “Generation P,” can you elaborate on how Pelevin’s views of political and mythological structures have evolved, especially in light of his new novel “Cool”?
Expert: Certainly. In “Generation P,” Pelevin analyzed the effects of advertising and consumer culture on post-Soviet Russian identity. With “Cool,” he seems to draw parallels between his earlier observations and contemporary issues, showing how the political surroundings and societal myths have morphed yet remained fundamentally similar. His portrayal of a dystopian future reflects a critique of the current global landscape, suggesting that our fears and hopes are intertwined with these timeless structures.
Editor: That brings up an interesting point regarding his focus on cyberpunk dystopia. What do you think sets Pelevin’s depiction apart from other contemporary authors in the genre?
expert: Pelevin’s work is distinctive due to his ability to interweave philosophical musings with engaging narratives. While other authors may focus on high-tech scenarios or societal collapse, Pelevin delves into the metaphysical implications of technology and culture. His unique voice melds satire with a profound understanding of human psychology, making his brand of cyberpunk not just about dystopian settings but also about the existential dilemmas we face in an increasingly digital world.
Editor: For readers who are eager to engage with “Cool” and Pelevin’s body of work, what practical advice would you suggest for approaching his literature?
Expert: I recommend approaching pelevin’s literature with a mindset open to both humor and critique. His narrative style can be dense, so it’s beneficial to read slowly and reflect on the philosophical themes. Additionally, readers might enhance their understanding by familiarizing themselves with the socio-political context of Russia during his earlier works, as these insights can enrich the reading experience of “Cool” and underscore its connections to current realities.
Editor: Thank you for these insights! With Pelevin’s upcoming release and his unique perspective on contemporary issues, it seems we have a lot to look forward to in his exploration of the human condition through the lens of dystopia.
Expert: Absolutely! “Cool” promises to be a thrilling continuation of Pelevin’s exploration of the complexities of our world, inviting readers to engage thoughtfully with both his satire and the underlying truths about society.
