A man, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was arrested in Pennsylvania investigation into the murder of Brian Thompsonthe CEO of the insurance company UnitedHealthcare killed last week in New York.
Mangione, stopped in Altoona, central Pennsylvania, he was found with a gun similar too the one used in the fatal shooting last Wednesday. the weapon, according to investigators, may have been produced with a 3D printer.
According to police sources cited by the media, he had with him a 3-page text with accusations against insurance companies and active in the pension sector. The document, in essence, would define violence as ’the right response’. According to investigators, the handwritten text “expresses his motivation.”
“I apologize but it had to be done,” was written in the text. “These parasites asked for it” and “I apologize for the inconvenience and trauma, but it had to be done”, among the sentences written by Mangione according to what a police officer who saw the document told CNN.In the note, Mangione states that he acted alone and that he financed himself. Among the objects in the young man’s possession, there is also a mask similar to those used by the killer caught on camera in New York.
The police were alerted by a fast food employee who noticed the man and associated him with the photos of Thompson’s killer. Officers noticed the subject’s suspicious behaviour. The young man allegedly showed false documents and an American passport:
The young man passed himself off as Marc Rosario of New Jersey, two senior officials said. The same name used, according to the police, by the alleged killer who arrived in New York City by bus at the end of November to register at the Manhattan hostel where he was staying.
“Members of the Altoona Police Department - explained New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch – arrested Luigi mangione, 26 years old, with the charge of possession of firearms. He is currently believed to be a person of interest in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare.”
The mayor of New York: “The arrested person matches the description”
New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed at a press conference that the person arrested “matches the description” of the killer. “He is also in possession of several items which we believe will link him to the case.”
The 3D printed gun?
The weapon in possession of the 26-year-old arrested in Pennsylvania was a “ghost gun capable of firing a 9mm round and a silencer”New York Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN, adding that the gun may have been 3D printed and that police will learn more details after ballistic testing.
Ghost guns are self-assembled weapons without serial numbers and therefore untraceable, often made from parts sold online. Purchasing ghost gun building kits online does not require a background check, so buyers can sidestep the typical requirements that might come with purchasing a firearm.
The murder
Thompson was killed in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, about 450 kilometers from Altoona, by a masked assailant who hit him from behind. The killing occurred around 6:45 a.m., surveillance footage showed, with the suspect fleeing on foot and then on a bicycle toward Central park. The latest footage of the alleged killer places him at the Upper Manhattan bus depot, according to New York police.

Time.news Editor (TNE): welcome to Time.news, were we delve into the pressing issues of our time. Today,we’re unpacking the recent arrest of luigi mangione in connection with the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Joining us is Dr. Emily Carter, a criminal justice expert specializing in homicide investigations. Thank you for being here, Dr. Carter.
dr. Emily carter (DEC): Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss this vital case.
TNE: Let’s start with the details we have. Luigi Mangione was arrested in pennsylvania, and reportedly, he was found with a gun similar to the one used in the fatal shooting of Thompson. How notable is this evidence in the context of a homicide investigation?
DEC: the discovery of a weapon that matches the type used in the murder is crucial. It not only provides a potential link between Mangione and the crime scene but also raises questions about motive and opportunity. Investigators will need to trace the gun’s ownership and usage, as well as consider any other forensic evidence that may connect him to Thompson’s murder.
TNE: It must also be concerning that the crime took place in New York, but mangione was apprehended in central Pennsylvania. What does this kind of cross-state crime typically imply about the suspect’s behavior?
DEC: Cross-state movements can suggest a couple of things. it may indicate a level of premeditation, where the suspect is trying to escape from law enforcement or hide their identity. Alternatively,it could point to a frantic or impulsive decision following the crime, indicating they were not entirely prepared for the consequences. Each scenario offers valuable insight into the suspect’s mindset, which investigators will analyze closely.
TNE: There must be a lot of public interest surrounding this case, given Thompson’s high-profile position. How does that affect the investigation and the legal proceedings ahead?
DEC: High-profile cases like this inevitably attract media attention, which can complicate things. investigators must remain focused and impartial, navigating public and media scrutiny while ensuring evidence is collected and processed without bias. Additionally, the defense for Mangione may leverage this public interest to argue for a fair trial in a less sensational manner, seeking to mitigate the impact of the media narrative on the jury.
TNE: Following a case like this, what steps do you think law enforcement will take next?
DEC: We can expect a thorough investigation that includes interviews with potential witnesses, an examination of surveillance footage, and a deep dive into Mangione’s background and any possible connections to Thompson.Additionally, they will be looking for eyewitness accounts and any digital evidence that could support or refute the claims against him.
