Rain or shine, this spirited group of seniors get their steps in a couple times each week, proving age is no barrier to adventure.
As part of the City of Cambridge 50+ annual membership, nature enthusiasts and social butterflies alike can join this tight-knit community of walkers.
“Our walking group is a splendid way to stay active, make new friends, and soak up the beauty of nature,” shares Lisa Whelan, supervisor of recreation for older adult services and community growth for the City of Cambridge.”besides the social benefits, walking offers a range of health perks, from lowering blood pressure and improving overall well-being to immersing yourself in the tranquility of the outdoors.”
Every walk wraps up with a cozy coffee gathering, and once a month, the group enjoys a special breakfast outing – a chance to bond over shared experiences and laughter.
Cambridge’s network of picturesque river trails naturally fosters a thriving walking culture. This particular group, with over 30 years of shared adventures, explores trails spanning Cambridge, puslinch, North Dumfries, and Kitchener.
“The group assembles every Tuesday at the Allan reuter Center, always ready to embrace any weather conditions,” Whelan explains. “If the weather takes a turn, they’ll choose a safer route with plenty of sidewalks and less trail exposure. But their hearts are truly in the woods – they prefer nature’s embrace whenever possible!”
Tuesday mornings see them setting off at 8:45 a.m., departing for their walk promptly at 9:00 a.m.
A dedicated volunteer convener meticulously plans each route, typically accommodating 5-10 walkers per outing.
Whelan highlights that participants should be comfortable driving to various locations and prepared for an invigorating, sometimes challenging one to two-hour hike.
The walking drop-in program is included in the City of Cambridge 50+ annual membership. Those without a membership can purchase a 50+ day pass to join in the fun.

Fifty-plus recreation siles offer a diverse range of activities designed to engage and inspire active older adults. Whether seeking fitness, musical exploration, artistic endeavors, intellectual enrichment, or kind card games, there’s something for everyone.
The City of Cambridge 50+ Annual Membership is a mere $38.86 + tax per year. A 50+ day pass is $2.13 for the winter session.

Sarah thompson: We are blessed to have stunning trails throughout Cambridge! One popular route is along the River Cam, where participants can enjoy the beautiful landscapes and historic architecture. The nature reserves are also favorites, especially during spring when flowers are in full bloom. It’s a feast for the senses!

Sarah thompson: Walking in nature has profound benefits for mental health. It reduces anxiety and promotes mindfulness.
