Time.news Editor (TNE): Good day, everyone! Today, we’re thrilled to have with us Dr. Jung Min-ho,a K-Pop expert and musicologist, who’s here to shed light on the recent accolades received by the new group TWS and their debut song “First Meeting Doesn’t Go As Planned.” Welcome, Dr. Jung!
dr. Jung Min-ho (DJM): Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss the incredible rise of TWS.
TNE: Let’s dive right in. TWS’s debut song has been recognized by Billboard as one of the ‘25 Best K-Pop Songs of 2024’ and secured the 5th spot. What does this achievement signal for new artists in the K-Pop industry?
DJM: This recognition is a significant milestone, especially for a new group. Billboard’s acknowledgment not only provides tremendous exposure in the Western music landscape but also establishes TWS as a serious contender in the global market. It shows that K-Pop is evolving, and new artists are getting the prospect to shine on that international stage much quicker than before.
TNE: Indeed! The song was a surprise hit, ranking 3rd in the first half of the year. What do you think contributed to its unexpected popularity?
DJM: Several factors played into its success. The song’s catchy melody and relatable lyrics resonate deeply with listeners, not just in korea but globally. Additionally, TWS’s powerful performance and the engaging choreography have clearly captivated audiences. The production quality from Pledis Entertainment also cannot be overstated; they have a reputation for crafting melodies that are both fresh and memorable.
TNE: Billboard mentioned that the song charted on their ‘Global 200’ for two months, which is commendable. How important is chart performance for new artists in maintaining career momentum?
DJM: Chart performance is crucial, especially for new artists. It serves as a barometer of their popularity and marketability. Sustained chart presence attracts more media attention, potential partnerships, and even opportunities for international tours. For TWS, maintaining this momentum will be key as they establish their identity and grow their fanbase.
TNE: you mentioned earlier the importance of performance. How does a group like TWS balance strong musicality with impactful visuals?
DJM: That’s a great question. K-Pop is a multi-faceted genre where visuals, performance, and music are all integrated.TWS has clearly invested time into both their musical training and their stage presence. It’s about storytelling through their performances—drawing the audience in and allowing them to connect with the song on multiple levels. Music videos and live performances in K-Pop are as much about the visual experience as they are about the music itself.
TNE: With this kind of success, what do you think the future holds for TWS and similar groups?
DJM: If they continue on this trajectory, TWS coudl become one of the defining groups of their generation. The road for K-Pop acts is often challenging, but with consistent quality music and strategic marketing, I believe TWS has the potential to break into mainstream markets worldwide. They might even pave the way for more diverse expressions within the genre.
TNE: Exciting prospects indeed! Before we wrap up, any final thoughts on what fans should look forward to regarding TWS?
