– What are the key benefits of the Small and Medium Hydraulic (PMH) project for farmers in Aourir?
Interview with Dr. Fatima El hadi, Agricultural Advancement expert
time.news Editor (TNE): Thank you for joining us, Dr. El Hadi. We recently reported on the notable developments in Aourir, particularly the Small and Medium Hydraulic (PMH) project. Can you give us an overview of its importance for local farmers?
Dr. Fatima El Hadi (Dr. El Hadi): Thank you for having me. The PMH project is crucial for the communes of Aqesri, Ameskroud, and Aourir, as it addresses the pressing need for efficient irrigation systems. With a total investment of 2.3 million dirhams, this initiative supports over 1,560 farmers by enhancing their productivity and income. Improving irrigation efficiency not only benefits agricultural yield but also ensures enduring water management in the region.
TNE: That’s a significant impact! What types of crops are most affected by this advancement in irrigation?
dr.El Hadi: The predominant crops in the region, including bananas, palms, olives, and carob, will greatly benefit from the enhanced irrigation network. These crops are vital for both local consumption and export, and improving their yields can substantially uplift the economic situation of farmers and the wider community.
TNE: It truly seems that the PMH project is part of a broader initiative aimed at sustainable agricultural development. Can you elaborate on the additional projects mentioned?
Dr. El Hadi: Certainly! Alongside the irrigation improvements, the larger initiative also focuses on economic diversification. The project supported by the economic interest group with six cooperatives, with a budget exceeding 6.4 million dirhams, aims to increase the income of rural women through the extraction and marketing of argan oil. Additionally, it includes setting up free-range chicken breeding units, which will create approximately 1,800 new working days for 42 rural women.
TNE: This focus on empowering rural women is commendable. Why do you think creating jobs for women is particularly crucial in this context?
Dr.El Hadi: Empowering rural women is critical for several reasons. Women often play a vital role in agricultural production yet remain underrepresented in economic decision-making. By improving their working conditions and income, we not only lift individual families out of poverty but also strengthen community resilience.Promoting local products like argan oil and almonds further enhances their economic contribution and preserves the cultural practices tied to these industries.
TNE: What advice would you give to farmers looking to adapt to these initiatives and fully benefit from the opportunities presented?
Dr. El Hadi: Farmers should actively participate in cooperative structures that allow them to share resources, knowlege, and market access. Embracing sustainable agricultural practices, such as efficient water use and diversifying crops, will be essential for long-term success. Additionally, taking advantage of training and technical assistance offered through these projects can significantly enhance their farming practices and overall productivity.
TNE: Thank you,Dr. El Hadi, for sharing your insights with us. The projects in Aourir represent a landmark effort to promote inclusive agricultural development and empower rural communities.
dr. El Hadi: thank you for having me! It’s encouraging to see such initiatives gaining attention, and I hope more regions adopt similar strategies to support farmers and foster sustainable rural development.
