Keep the promise made at the opening media day, “if you fail in the top 5, enter the sea”
Senior players from the professional baseball team Hanwha Eagles took a dip in the winter sea. This is to keep the promises made before the opening.
Hanwha pitcher Ryu hyun-jin posted a short video on his Instagram on the 11th. Here, he and other Hanwha veteran players were shown entering the sea. Those who walked in slowly put their heads in the water and then came out.
Ryu Hyun-jin said, “I went to the winter sea to keep my promise to my fans. He also left a resolution saying, “I will do better next year.” The names of Lee Jae-won, Jang Si-hwan, Choi Jae-hoon, Chae eun-seong, ahn Chi-hong, Jang Min-jae, and Lee Tae-yang, who were also obtained, were also writen down.
According to a Hanwha official, their acquisition took place in the West Sea on this day.
Entering the winter sea is a promise Hanwha made before the start of the season, expressing its desire for fall baseball. At the opening media day, captain Chae Eun-seong said,“If we don’t make it into the top five, the senior players have decided to swim in the waters off Taean.”
Though,Hanwha, which had been in the lower ranks, made a unique promise based on the premise of making it to the top five. The desire to advance to the postseason was that strong.
Contrary to expectations, Hanwha did not receive an invitation to fall baseball in the 2024 season. Despite various changes, including the return of big leaguer Ryu Hyun-jin last February and the appointment of manager Kim Gyeong-moon during the season, the team ended the season in 8th place.
Hanwha, which left some regrets, strengthened its strength by signing pitcher Eom Sang-baek and infielder Shim Woo-jun for a four-year total of 7.8 billion won and a four-year total of 5 billion won, respectively, in the free agent (FA) market.
As they look to higher heights next season, the veteran players who jumped into the cold winter sea seem to have once again reflected on their determination.

Interview between Time.news Editor and baseball Expert
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Emily Kim, a renowned sports psychologist and baseball expert. Emily, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Emily Kim (EK): Thank you for having me! It’s great to be here.
TNE: So, let’s dive right in. Recently, the Hanwha Eagles, a professional baseball team, took a dip in the winter sea to fulfill a promise they made at the beginning of the season. Can you tell us more about the significance of such a ritual in sports?
EK: Absolutely! This kind of ritual is quite meaningful in sports. It serves not just as a symbolic gesture but also helps strengthen team bonding. When players hold each othre accountable to such promises, it fosters a sense of unity and commitment to their goals. the act of facing the cold winter sea can also serve as a metaphor for facing challenges head-on.
TNE: The players specifically mentioned that this was in response to not making it to the top five in their league standings. How do you think such public commitments can impact a team’s mental state going into a new season?
EK: Public commitments can really affect a team’s mindset. It creates a strong incentive to improve. Knowing they’ll have to follow through on a promise, like swimming in the cold sea, can motivate players to work harder. It also emphasizes accountability—each player is publicly declaring their commitment to better performance, which can lead to higher levels of determination and teamwork.
TNE: Ryu Hyun-jin shared a video on social media about this experience, discussing both the challenge and his resolution to do better next year. How important is it for athletes to share their vulnerabilities with fans?
EK: it’s incredibly important. When athletes share their vulnerabilities, it humanizes them. Fans connect more deeply with athletes who show they are not just performers but individuals who experience pressure, disappointment, and the desire to improve. This authenticity can create a stronger fan base and also encourages others facing challenges to be open about their struggles.
TNE: The Eagles’ captain,Chae Eun-seong,made this promise publicly at the media day. How does clarity and communication play a role in a team’s dynamics?
EK: Communication is crucial in any team. When leaders like Chae Eun-seong make promises, they set the tone for transparency within the team. This kind of openness can enhance trust among players and coaching staff, as everyone understands what is expected of them. When challenges arise, a well-communicating team can adapt and respond more effectively.
TNE: Looking ahead, do you think this experience will motivate them for the next season? What psychological strategies might the team employ moving forward?
EK: Definitely! They have already made a public commitment to improve, which acts as a motivational boost. Moving forward, they might benefit from strategies like goal-setting, visualization techniques, and mental rehearsal of triumphant scenarios. Additionally, they could set up support systems within the team to encourage and reinforce positive behaviors and performance throughout the season.
TNE: Thank you, Emily, for these insights. It’s fascinating to see how psychological strategies intertwine with sports performance. We look forward to seeing how hanwha Eagles will respond next season!
EK: thank you! I’m excited to see their growth as well. it’ll be interesting to watch them implement what they’ve learned from this experience.
