DECRYPTION – After a continuous decline until the end of the 2000s, the death rate of children under the age of 1 has been increasing since 2012. A phenomenon that is poorly understood and too little analyzed.
One thousand two hundred. This is the number of deaths of children under the age of 1 that could be avoided each year if the infant mortality rate in France were equivalent to that of Sweden or Finland. This terrible observation, already underlined by INSEE data, has just been confirmed by a study published in the scientific journal The Lancet Regional Health Europe. “Thirty years ago, we were among the good students, then the machine jammed. From 2005 the decline in infant mortality slowed down and from 2012 until 2019 it increased”underlines the Pr Martin Chalumeau, one of the study’s authors and a pediatrician at Necker Hospital in Paris.
