DESCRIBED – The SpaceRise consortium is responsible for the design and development of this €10.6 billion advanced connectivity infrastructure.

Don’t depend on SpaceX’s giant American Starlink or Amazon’s Kuiper constellations. This is the goal of the European Union (EU) which on Monday launched Iris2, its future sovereign space connectivity infrastructure. This, by signing a twelve-year concession contract with the SpaceRise consortium, led by the French Eutelsat, the Luxembourg-based SES and the Spanish Hispasat.

The three telecommunications satellite operators and co-contractors shared responsibilities, with SES taking the lead on administrative aspects, Hispasat on the ground segment and Eutelsat on systems and engineering, becoming the chief technical officer (CTO) of the programme. This trio is responsible for the design, production and operation of Iris2, relying on a team of industrial partners: Thales Alenia Space (TAS), OHB, Airbus Defense and Space, Telespazio, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Hisdesat and Thales SIX.
