Women’s European Handball Championship
With a hard-fought 25:24 against world champions France, Hungary’s handball women won bronze at the European Championships on Sunday evening in Vienna.
The two teams faced each other previously in Debrecen, where France won the match for a group victory 30:27. On Friday, Hungary had to play against Olympic champions Norway in the semi-finals, where the young team could only hold out for 30 minutes and then lost 22:30. But because France failed against Denmark (22:24), the Scandinavian teams played among themselves on Sunday (Norway won the title convincingly again with 31:23), although there was a new game in the match for third place.
In front of nearly 9,000 spectators, of which the Hungarian fans were the loudest, Hungary held on to a one-goal lead in a game that was fiercely fought until the end. As the national coach Wladimir Golovin emphasized, the victory was due to the strong performance of the team and that “we wanted to win more today”. Szemerey, who returned from a muscle injury in goal, provided the necessary support with a save, the powerful Kuczora added five goals from left back, the wings scored eight goals in total and Klujber confidently converted all five seven-metre penalties.
The Hungarians were in the minor final of the European Championships for the fourth time since 1998 and won bronze for the fourth time (only in 1994 did they come up empty from the same position). Three Hungarians were elected to the TOP team of the European Championship: Petra Simon as the best young talent, Viktória Győri-Lukács as the right winger and Katrin Klujber as the top scorer, who scored a total of 60 goals in nine games.
Katrin Klujber was the top scorer at the European Championships with 60 goals.
