The Mediterranean organization SOS announced that its ship “Ocean Viking” rescued 129 migrants, including 43 children, in the Ionian Sea between southern Italy and Greece, in cooperation with the Italian Coast Guard.

The organization, based in Marseille, southeastern France, said in a statement, “The people who were rescued informed our teams that they left Turkey six days ago. The youngest survivor is a child in his first month traveling with his mother. “
Among the survivors were 43 women.
The Ocean Viking, with 163 survivors on board, is heading to the port of Ravenna in north-east Italy, which the Italian authorities have authorized to be used to take migrants on board. On Thursday, the ship treated 34 migrants from Gambia and Syria.
Figures from the International Organization for Migration show that 2,140 people have gone missing or died in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year while trying to reach Europe.
