Cubs provide $5 million in annual salary to Yankees for Bellinger

The New York Yankees, who finished second in this year’s Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series, welcomed Cody Bellinger, a former National League (NL) Most Valuable Player (MVP).

MLB.com reported on the 18th (Korean time) that the Yankees gave up right-handed reliever Cody Potty to the Chicago Cubs and brought in outfielder Bellinger.

The Cubs will provide $5 million (approximately 7.19 billion won) of Bellinger’s annual salary of $27.5 million (approximately 39.53 billion won) to the Yankees next season.

The Yankees sought to renew the contract with key hitter Juan Soto, who became a free agent (FA) at the end of the season, but lost it to their local rival, the New York Mets.

Soto left the Yankees on the 9th, signing an astronomical 15-year contract with the Mets worth $765 million (about 1.1 trillion won).

To fill Soto’s vacancy, the Yankees chose Bellinger.

Bellinger is a star player with a brilliant career, including NL Rookie of the Year in 2017, NL MVP in 2019, and two Silver Sluggers. In 2019, when he won the MVP, he achieved outstanding results with 47 home runs, 115 RBI, and OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) of 1.035 in 156 games.

However, the following year, he was sluggish with a batting average of 0.239 and an OPS of 0.789, and in the 2021 season, he suffered a severe slump, with a batting average of 0.165, 10 home runs, 36 RBI, and an OPS of 0.542.

Bellinger, who failed to rebound in 2022 with a batting average of 0.210, 19 home runs, 68 RBIs, and an OPS of 0.654, was eventually released from the LA Dodgers after the season.

After making a new start for the Cubs, Bellinger appeared in 130 games last year and announced his resurgence with a batting average of 0.307, 26 home runs, 97 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, and an OPS of 0.881.

Bellinger, who became a free agent after the season, signed a three-year, $80 million contract with the Cubs in February of this year, but recorded a batting average of 0.266, 18 home runs, 78 RBIs, and an OPS of 0.751 in 130 games, which was worse than last season.
