Kang Shin-wook – Park Chang-beom – Ahn Sang-soo – Yoo Seung-min
“Decision will be made by the 23rd, the day before registration begins.”
Persons who announced their intention to run for the Korea Sports Council presidential election agreed to unify the candidates, saying, ‘We must prevent current Chairman Lee Ki-heung (69) from running for a third consecutive term.’
Four people, including professor emeritus at Dankook University Kang Shin-wook (68), former Korean Wushu Association president Park Chang-beom (55), former Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo (78), and former Korean Table Tennis Association president Yoo Seung-min (42), attended a ceremony at a hotel in Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 17th regarding the unification of candidates for the Korean Sports Council presidential election. We had our first meeting. After exchanging opinions for nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes, they announced two agreements: △to achieve the unification of candidates desired by the public and athletes, and △to decide on the final candidate by the 23rd, the day before the start of candidate registration.
They decided to meet several more times to discuss specific unification methods, such as public opinion polls. In addition, he contacted Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council President Kang Tae-seon (75), former Gangwon Province Sports Council Secretary General Kim Yong-ju (63), and former Korea Sepak Takraw Association President Oh Joo-young (39), who expressed their intention to participate in this election but did not attend the meeting on this day, and said, ‘Anti Lee Ki-heung. We decided to strengthen our solidarity.
In this election for the president of the Korea Sports Council, those recommended by 228 city, county, and district sports associations across the country will be listed on the electoral college in a separate category called ‘designated electors.’ This is why some analyzes say that it is difficult to overcome the ‘incumbency premium’ without candidate unification. In the 2021 Korean Sports Council President election, Professor Emeritus Kang (507 votes) in second place and candidate Jong-geol Lee (423 votes) in third place received a total of 930 votes, but the votes were split and Chairman Lee (915 votes) was elected.
The election to elect the 42nd President of the Korea Sports Council will be held on January 14 next year. The candidate registration period is for two days, the 24th and 25th. Chairman Lee, who is currently introducing himself as a ‘candidate,’ plans to hold a press conference about his candidacy around the 23rd.
