New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb expressed “great concern” about safety in light of the city’s transport workers strike.
Every year, the police ensure that the 250,000 people who come to the city to watch the fireworks can return home safely afterwards, Webb said at the press conference.
Leaving the city depends on transport, including train traffic.
“If the trains are not available and people can’t leave the city, I am very concerned about the danger this can pose to the public,” the police commissioner admitted.
She added that she does not rule out the possibility of recommending to the government to cancel fireworks. “This is serious,” Webb emphasized.
This week, members of the Railway, Tram and Bus Union, demanding a pay rise, voted to go on strike starting on December 28.
More than a million people are expected to watch the fireworks on Sydney’s coast this year.
