The updated version of Grand Theft Auto V finally officially released last week, available for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, and the tech-savvy folks at Digital Foundry are back with an impressive share of comparisons, finding Discuss the differences between the two current-generation home console versions above.
While the two versions generally seem to get the same amount of love, there are actually a few small details that set them apart among the 3 graphics modes; Performance Mode (fixed 4K/30fps), Fidelity Mode (1440p/60fps) and Performance Ray tracing mode. One of the differences comes from loading times, which take significantly less time. Getting into Trevor’s trailer now only takes 23,18 seconds on the PS5, which is a lot less than the 2 minutes on the PS4 version. The Xbox Series X is even faster, loading in just 20,76 seconds.
If you look at the graphics, Digital Foundry notes that “PS5 renders an extra shadow under the car,” while “cubemap reflections across vehicles are of higher quality on Xbox Series X.” Aside from a few small details like this, the two versions seem to be closely linked in this department.
In terms of performance, there are some minor differences, as the frame rate drops somewhat during heavy scenes. During the “Mr Philips” mission, the frame rate in performance ray tracing mode “almost fell on the 40 fps line in the most explosive scenes” for the Playstation 5, and for the “Xbox Series X,” but this time around 50 fps “. However, some scenarios are reversed, so in conclusion, the two versions are actually comparable.
When playing in 4K fidelity, the frame rate seems to be almost locked at 30fps, with Digital Foundry finding only one exception, noting that they “only saw one drop: yes, Mr Philips is at it again, this time leading to a drop in the Playstation 5” Going down to 20fps, the impact on the Series X is much less, falling around 27fps.”
Basically, if you really like Grand Theft Auto V, it seems like you can be a happy rogue no matter which version you end up with.
