Why not give pets for Christmas?

by times news cr

The christmas time and Christmas celebrations are the perfect excuse to give what our loved ones want throughout the year; That is, the waste is justified by the circumstances. It may be very planned, in some cases; However, sometimes, in the desire to comply with the details, regardless of what is spent, we make purchases that are not always the best option. The best, or rather worst, example of this is the pet purchasewhether dogs, cats or any other animal that may be kept at home.

Regarding the topic, the State Commission of Natural Parks and Fauna (Cepanaf), called on fathers and mothers not only not to give a pet to their daughters and sons as a Christmas gift, but to raise awareness about what doing so entails, since “they are not toys that can be thrown away, but living beings.” with specific needs and care.”

Through the gazette of the Mexican SystemVeterinary Doctor Erick Garduño Morales, expressed:

Raise awareness, especially during these holidays, that there is a lot of buying pets as gifts, that they are not just a toy, but a sentient being that can become part of the family.“.

For this reason, he highlighted that, most of the time, people are not prepared to assume this commitment and responsibility, and that is why it results in the abandonment of animals in the short term.

In addition to another series of recommendations, he urged citizens to approach the work of the Cepanaf As far as adoptions are concerned, to learn about the Responsible Adoption of Sentient Beings Program, promoted by the Government of the State of Mexico, “which seeks to give a decent home to dogs and cats that have been rescued; There, veterinary doctors offer advice on their ownership.”

THE DANGERS OF GIVING PETS AT CHRISTMAS

The director of Institutional Development and Communication of the UNAM-Banfield Veterinary Hospital, Fausto Reyes Delgadohe said, for the UNAM Globalwhich Giving dogs and cats has become a custom, but it is something that we must control.

Consider that when they are puppies, whether dogs or cats, almost all of them like them and find them tender, but as they grow and, of course, change, they are no longer what the owners expect. Because? They grow and eat more than when they are just born and are a few months old, it involves investing time and money, they relieve themselves inside the house, among other things. And that leads to the fact that, by not being tolerated or treated with dignity, end up abandoned in the streets or tied to rooftops.

“In Mexico, 50 percent of pets are kept out of habit, not because they know or want to take care of them.. This causes problems because sometimes someone in the family does not love the pet, and the animal is blamed for a human dispute,” they add in the publication.

To the conclusion they reach, both Cepanaf and the UNAM expertis that the best option is adoption, because there is an overpopulation of animals that have been abandoned. To do this, there are programs like the one mentioned above or many adoption centers where you can go to do the entire process easily and quickly, but above all responsibly.
