According to local media such as Vietnam docnhanh on the 22nd (local time), the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Committee (MAUR) held an opening ceremony for Ho Chi Minh City’s first urban railway line 1, Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien, and the entire section was officially operational from 10 a.m. announced that it would commence. This is the first official opening in 12 years since construction began in 2012.
Ho Chi Minh City’s Urban Railway Line 1 is the city’s first railway that runs a total of 19.7km from Ben Thanh Station to Suoi Thien Station, and has a total of 14 stations, including 3 underground stations and 11 above-ground stations. Tickets are sold in four types: ▲one-way ticket ▲1-day ticket ▲3-day ticket ▲monthly ticket.
Ticket fares range from 7,000 dong to a maximum of 20,000 dong based on cash payment and an additional charge proportional to the distance. The fare for a 1-day pass and a 3-day pass is 40,000 VND and 90,000 VND, respectively. Monthly passes are sold for 300,000 VND. If you purchase a ticket using a non-cash payment method, you can receive a discount of 1,000 dong. Additionally, people in need of social consideration, such as the disabled, seniors, and children, can ride for free.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s docnhanh released a report showing crowds of people flocking to Ben Thanh Station, the departure station, to use the train from 10 a.m. when the train officially starts operation.
The released photos show the outside of the station being crowded even early on a Sunday morning, people boarding the city railway for the first time and looking at the moving scenery outside, and people standing and holding the handles with happy expressions.
As the crowds gathered, station staff at Ben Thanh Station managed the movement of people within the station and explained several times through loudspeakers how to get on and off the train.
“The subway was our grandparents’ dream,” said 97-year-old Vu Huy Ngoc, who used the railway that day. “I am satisfied that I was able to experience the city’s first railway in the late afternoon (with my wife),” he told the media.
Le Thanh Kang, who had been waiting for the opening of the railway with her two children since 5:30 a.m., said after boarding the train, “I am very happy and proud,” and added, “I have high expectations because I have seen the subway operating in other countries, including Hanoi, Vietnam.”
Meanwhile, Metro Line 1 Ben Thanh-Suoi Thien, which operates an average of 9 trains a day, has 3 compartments and can accommodate a total of 930 passengers. Initially, approximately 200 trips will be operated from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is known that the train will be operated free of charge for 30 days from the date of opening.
