A public debate involving the Emergency Response Committee of the Korean Medical Association and the Ministers of Education and Health and Welfare was canceled.
On the 23rd, Kim Young-ho, Chairman of the National Assembly Education Committee, and Park Ju-min, Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee, both members of the Democratic Party of Korea, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Hall and said, “The legislative debate hosted by the National Assembly was ultimately canceled,” and “Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Joo-ho and Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Gyu-hong attended the public debate.” “It’s because they refused to do so,” he said. On the 19th, the Korean Medical Association Emergency Committee and the Democratic Party held a meeting at the Medical Association Building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul and announced that they would push for an open debate with the participation of the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health and Welfare to resolve the prolonged legislative conflict.
Chairman Kim and Chairman Park called for the immediate resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Lee and Minister Cho. They said, “The regular recruitment for college admission for the 2025 school year is just one week away. “Because of the government that says, ‘If you endure, you will win,’ and the government that has not even tried, the worst-case scenario of 7,500 students taking classes per school year is at risk of becoming a reality,” he said. “The two ministers do not show even the slightest will to resolve the conflict in the medical field.” He criticized, “He is no longer qualified to hold public office for the people.”
The Medical Association Emergency Committee also held a press conference at the Medical Association Building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 23rd and expressed regret over the failure of the public debate. Park Hyeong-wook, chairman of the Korean Medical Association’s emergency committee, said, “The open debate was not a proposal by a specific political party, but was agreed upon after joint efforts by the Education and Welfare Committees of the National Assembly.” “He went out of his way to sabotage.” He added, “We need measures to show sincerity that we will cancel or negotiate on the basics of the 2026 admissions process,” and added, “Only when the government shows a sincere attitude will real discussions be possible.”
