“It is essential to place peace, stability and development at the heart of collective action, hence the need for a global and integrated approach, based on trust, dialogue and mutual respect,” said Mr. Akhannouch during the Future Summit initiated by the UN Secretary General.

In his speech in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, the head of government recalled that this Summit, which is being held in a global context punctuated by complex challenges, provides an opportunity to renew the international community’s adherence to the United Nations Charter and reaffirm collective commitment to reinvigorate the multilateral system.

“Renewed multilateral action calls for a real political will to act collectively and inclusive solutions, based on equity and solidarity,” he maintained.

He recalled, in this sense, the appeal launched by HM King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Marrakech, in favor of a reform of the institutions and frameworks of the system multilateral in order to take into account the evolution of the socio-economic and political situation.

In this framework, Africa must be, added the head of government, at the heart of the priorities of UN action in order to transform the challenges facing the continent into opportunities for development and prosperity.

Referring to the pressing issue of climate change, Mr. Akhannouch indicated that Morocco aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 and to increase the volume of investments in renewable energies, including green hydrogen, to increase the share of clean energy in the electricity mix to 52% by 2030.

The head of government also reviewed the progress made by Morocco, particularly in terms of social protection and strengthening food and health sovereignty.

The Future Summit, which is part of the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together, at the UN headquarters in New York, heads of state and government, in addition to representatives of international organizations and civil society.

On this occasion, UN Member States adopted a Compact for the Future which includes a commitment to reducing the digital divide and accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
