A German-Russian was arrested in Nizhny Novgorod. He is said to have prepared an assassination attempt.
The Russian domestic secret service FSB says it has arrested a man who also has a German passport ahead of a planned act of sabotage. “According to the arrestee’s confession, in November 2024 he prepared an attack on a railway track bed in Nizhny Novgorod using a homemade explosive device in exchange for a financial reward promised by his curator,” the authority said in a statement. Recently, Russian secret services have increasingly arrested foreigners on charges of allegedly planning attacks in Russia.
In the present case it is said to be a 20-year-old with dual citizenship from Nizhny Novgorod. The city of millions is located on the Volga about 400 kilometers east of Moscow. According to the accusation, the man was a member of a neo-Nazi group and acted on behalf of Ukrainian secret services.
In the dual national’s apartment, the officers claim to have found a “ready-to-use and improvised explosive device” as well as correspondence between the suspect and a representative of the Ukrainian special services.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also justified the war of aggression against Ukraine by citing the Nazis who allegedly rule there. Opponents of the war in Russia – especially if they support Ukraine – are often discredited as Nazis.
