Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty has announced that Egypt will contribute troops to the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia, as ties between the two countries increase.
Abdel Ati said during a press conference in Cairo with his Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moallem Faki: “Egypt has decided to participate in the African Union mission that will be deployed in Somalia at the request of the Somali government and also based on the welcome which he put before. Peace and Security Council of the African Union.”
The African Union Stabilization and Support Mission, known as OSUM, will replace a counter-terrorism mission that expires this year.
Conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia erupted this year over Addis Ababa’s plan to build a port in the fractured region of Somalia, which has angered regional powers and threatened to further destabilize the Horn of Africa.
After talks between Türkiye, Somalia and Ethiopia said they would work together to resolve the issue.
Abdel-Ati said: “I also spoke to the Minister about the situation in Somalia and about Egypt’s support for extending state authorities and sovereignty over the entire national territory of Somalia, and the total rejection of any dictates and any unilateral measures that affect for unity, for safety. and the sovereignty of fraternal Somalia.”
The result of the dispute is the rapprochement of Somalia with Egypt, which criticized the Somali agreement and was in conflict with Ethiopia for many years over Addis Ababa’s construction of a dam on the River Nile.
After signing a joint security agreement, Egypt delivered arms and ammunition to Somalia, including anti-aircraft guns and artillery.
