Congress barely reached the quorum needed for approval.

The Associated Press and Euro News reported on the 24th (local time) that a new pro-European coalition government has been launched in Romania, where far-right forces have recently risen rapidly.

According to reports, the Romanian parliament approved the new government the previous day with 240 votes in favor and 143 against. It barely exceeded the quorum (233 votes) required for approval.

The new cabinet led by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu took the oath of office to President Klaus Iohannis at the Presidential Palace and began work.

Ciolacu, a member of the pro-Western Social Democratic Party (PSD), will be able to continue as prime minister with the launch of the new government.

The new coalition government is made up of pro-European parties, including the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party (PNL), and the Hungarian Democratic Union (UDMR).

In the first round of the Romanian presidential election held on the 24th of last month, far-right populist Cullen Georgescu took first place, breaking expectations. During this process, suspicions were raised that Russia used TikTok to campaign for the candidate.

As suspicions of election law violations and Russian intervention arose over candidate Gheorgescu’s unexpected performance, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election on the 6th, two days before the runoff election. The re-election schedule has not been set.

In the general election held on the 1st, the Social Democratic Party came in first place, but failed to secure a majority. On the other hand, far-right parties, anti-establishment parties, and pro-Russian parties accounted for one-third of the total votes.

Due to the rise of far-right forces, pro-European parties agreed to form a coalition government excluding them.

The Associated Press reported, “With the launch of the coalition government, the political chaos in Romania, a European Union (EU) country, caused by the cancellation of the presidential election has come to an end.”
