Diversification of employment patterns, including an increase in delivery companies
Federation of Korean Industries “Improve the dual structure of the labor market”
“We need to increase more quality part-time jobs.”
In the past 10 years, the number of part-time workers in Korea has increased by more than 90%. This appears to be a phenomenon that has emerged as employment patterns in industrial sites have diversified, such as the increase in employees in the delivery industry. As the increase in part-time jobs is an unavoidable reality, it is being pointed out that the number of high-quality part-time jobs must be increased.
According to ‘Changes and implications of part-time workers over the past 10 years’ published by the Korea Employers Federation on the 24th, the number of part-time workers last year was 3.873 million, an increase of 90.3% (1.838 million) compared to 2014 (2.035 million). During the same period, the number of regular workers increased by 963,000 (12.869 million → 13.832 million).
What is noteworthy is that the proportion of workers who voluntarily chose part-time work last year was 59.8%, an increase of 12.1 percentage points compared to 47.7% in 2014, 10 years ago. In particular, 62.4% of workers chose part-time jobs because they were ‘satisfied with the working conditions.’ The Federation of Korean Economy’s analysis is that as the number of elderly people looking for jobs after retirement increases, awareness of part-time jobs has also improved.
The Korea Federation of Korean Industries explained, “The number of part-time workers has been increasing for 18 consecutive years since 2006,” and “recently, it appears to reflect changes in society that value the balance of work and life.”
Last year, 70.5% of part-time workers were women, 70.2% had a high school diploma or less, and 97.2% belonged to small businesses with fewer than 300 employees. The number of ‘high-quality part-time jobs’ with stable employment and guaranteed wages above the minimum wage was 545,000, or 14.1% of the total.
Lim Young-tae, head of the Employment and Social Policy Division of the Federation of Korean Industries, said, “Part-time jobs are an opportunity for the underemployed to quickly participate in the labor market,” adding, “It can be a very effective job for workers in the childcare period, when work-family balance is important, or for the elderly, who need economic activity after retirement.” “There is,” he said. However, he added, “However, what needs to be improved is that there are still not enough quality part-time jobs.”
