Following the meeting of the leaders of the revolutionary military factions with the leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the Syrian Military Operations Administration announced an agreement to dissolve all the factions and merge them under the umbrella of the Ministry of Defense.
It was agreed during the meeting to unify the factions under the management of military operations and control security in the region, and to begin withdrawing heavy weapons by the administration and preparing designated places to begin the process of withdrawing weapons that were in the possession of the previous regime.
Earlier, Al-Sharaa called on the international community to lift economic sanctions on Syria, indicating that the armed factions will announce themselves within days to dissolve themselves, and weapons outside the state’s control will not be allowed.
Al-Sharaa added: “Within days, we will announce the Ministry of Defense and the formation of a committee of military leaders to draw up the structure of the army. Then the factions will announce the dissolution of themselves one by one. We will not allow weapons outside the country, and we will end the issue of escaping weapons as soon as possible.”
On Saturday, the new Syrian administration announced the appointment of Murhaf Abu Qasra as Minister of Defense in the Syrian transitional government.
Abu Qasra is an agricultural engineer, from the city of Halfaya in the Hama countryside. He was known by his military name, “Abu Hassan al-Hamwi” or “Abu al-Hassan 600,” and he holds the position of commander-in-chief of the military wing of “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham,” which is classified as a terrorist organization in the United States and other countries.
Abu Qasra led the military operations that began at the end of last November from Idlib, then moved to several major cities, such as Aleppo, Hama, and Homs, then reached the capital, Damascus, and overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
