Rama announced that the government would shut down TikTok from the beginning of 2025, prompting the platform to “ask the Albanian government for urgent clarifications,” according to a spokesperson.
This decision comes less than a month after a 14-year-old student was killed and another injured in a fight near a school in Tirana following an argument on social media.
The platform’s spokesperson said, “Regarding the aforementioned tragic incident, we found no evidence that either the person or the victim had accounts on TikTok, and reports indicate that the videos related to those incidents were published on another platform, not on TikTok . .”
Albania’s Prime Minister responded on Sunday, saying that this decision was not “a quick reaction to a single incident,” but “a decision that was carefully considered in consultation with parents in schools across the country.”
“TikTok has no reason to demand clarifications from Albania because the decisions are made by the Albanians of Albania, not the owners of the TikTok algorithm,” he said on the X platform.
“The claim that the teenager’s murder had nothing to do with TikTok because the dispute did not come to the fore shows a failure to appreciate the seriousness of the threat that TikTok poses to children and youth today,” Rama wrote. .
