Ukraine and Russia exchange “prisoners” and Kiev launches a new attack on Kursk

The acting governor of the Kursk region in southern Russia announced that Ukrainian forces launched a new attack on the town of Ljuv yesterday, Monday, causing severe damage to a two-story residential building, a week after four people were killed in another strike.

Alexander Khinshtin wrote in a message via the Telegram messaging application, “One person was injured in the latest attack in the region, part of which was controlled by Ukrainian forces after they penetrated across the border in August.” Khenstein stated that power lines were cut in two areas.

He said about the Ukrainian attack, “Their goal is to intimidate people, spread confusion, panic and chaos, and deprive children of the opportunity to enjoy the coming New Year.”

The Ukrainian army announced damage and published pictures of what it said was a fire in the town, without mentioning who was behind the attack. The reports could not be independently verified.

Khinshtin said last week that “four people were killed and five others were injured in a Ukrainian bombing of residential buildings and other sites in Lajouf.”

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Monday that the new US security aid to Ukraine, worth $2.5 billion, came at a critical moment and will help strengthen Ukrainian defenses along the front lines.

“Every act of solidarity from our partners saves lives, strengthens our independence and strengthens our resilience,” Zelensky added in a post on the X website. “It also shows that democracies are stronger than authoritarian aggressors.”

“Ukraine has returned 189 prisoners of war to their homeland in the latest exchange with Russia,” Zelensky and the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.

The ministry stated that 150 Russian soldiers returned to their country. She added that the Russian prisoners were released in Belarus, a close ally of Moscow in the war that has been going on for 34 months, and will be transferred to Russia.
