An unfortunate incident occurred in which a Swiss International Air Lines flight from Bucharest to Zurich had to make an emergency landing in Graz, Austria due to smoke on board, resulting in the death of a crew member.

According to the Associated Press on the 31st (local time), the aircraft made an emergency landing on the 23rd due to smoke occurring inside the cockpit and cabin due to engine problems.

All 74 passengers were evacuated safely, but two crew members were taken to the hospital, one of whom died while receiving treatment.

Swiss Air CEO Jens Ferringer said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our precious colleague. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.”

The prosecutor’s office in Graz, Austria, ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of the crew’s death and is thoroughly investigating the cause of the accident.

Swiss Air plans to conduct its own internal investigation to determine the cause of the smoke. It said it would also investigate the usability and mechanical defects of protective breathing equipment (PBE) used by cabin crew.
