Macron: Dissolving parliament will cause division in France… Referendum possibility suggested

New Year’s message: “I will request a decision on certain important issues”

French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged on the 31st (local time) that the decision to hold early general elections this summer had plunged France into division.

According to the Associated Press and AFP, he said in his 2025 New Year’s address, “Tonight, I acknowledge that the dissolution (of parliament) has brought about more division than a solution for the French people at the moment.”

He then emphasized, “I will take full responsibility for this.”

AP analyzed that President Macron apologized for his decision to dissolve parliament early and hold early general elections last June.

Previously, in June, President Macron suddenly dissolved parliament after the far-right National Coalition (RN) won a landslide victory in the European Parliament elections. Early general elections will be held in July.

The general election resulted in a ‘Hung Parliament’ situation in which no party could secure a majority.

The left-wing coalition New People’s Front (NFP), the largest political faction, also held only about one-third of the seats in the House of Representatives. The ruling coalition Ensemble (ENS) and the conservative Republican Party (LR) followed suit, but failed to make an overwhelming difference in seat share.

President Macron did not appoint a prime minister from the main opposition party, but instead appointed Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who was supported by the ruling party and the centrist conservative camp, but was ultimately discredited.

Afterwards, centre-right Prime Minister François Bairou was appointed, but is under pressure from a vote of no confidence.

In his New Year’s address, President Macron mentioned that he would ask for “decisions on certain important issues” in 2025. Although no specific issues were mentioned, it appears that more than one referendum is being proposed to break the political deadlock, AFP reported.

He hopes to pass the bill through parliament and said, “Our government must be able to follow a path of compromise to get things done.”
