Cannot complete contract until 2027 and withdraws midway

Shin Tae-yong, coach of the Indonesian national soccer team, who is participating in the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup, is attending an official press conference held at the Main Media Center (MMC) in Doha, Qatar on the 23rd (local time). 2024.1.23 News 1

Shin Tae-yong (55), coach of the Indonesian national soccer team, was sacked due to the aftermath of being eliminated from the group stage of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup (Mitsubishi Cup).

On the 6th, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) announced on its official website that “the contract with coach Shin Tae-yong, who led the Indonesian national team and the under-23 national team, has been terminated.”

PSSI explained Coach Shin’s dismissal as “a decision made after careful consideration in order to achieve the long-term goals of Indonesian soccer.”

With this, Director Shin ended his partnership with Indonesia, which had been ongoing since 2020, after about five years.

PSSI extended the contract period with Director Shin until 2027 in June last year, but Director Shin did not complete his term.

Coach Shin achieved significant results while coaching both the Indonesian A team and the U23 and U20 national teams. They finished second in the 2020 Mitsubishi Cup and advanced to the first tournament of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup, and took 4th place after defeating Korea in the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup, which also served as a qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In particular, in Group C of the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup Asian region third qualifying round, they were tied with Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China, taking third place (6 points), causing a sensation. Indonesia was only one point behind second-place Australia (6 points), which was on the Maginot Line for the finals, so expectations were growing for advancing to the World Cup finals.

Coach Shin’s poor performance in this year’s Mitsubishi Cup was largely responsible for shaking his position.

Indonesia performed poorly in the group stage of the Mitsubishi Cup, known as the ‘Southeast Asia World Cup’, with 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses, failing to even reach the semifinals after being pushed out by Vietnam and the Philippines led by coach Kim Sang-sik.

The third qualifying round of the North and Central America World Cup, with only four games left, is scheduled to resume in March, but Coach Shin was unable to achieve his dream of advancing to the World Cup finals and ended up dropping out.
