Russia-Ukraine War: A journalist close to Navalny was killed in Kiev

by time news

The Russian journalist from the independent insider website, Oksana Baolina, was killed today (Wednesday) in a Russian shelling while documenting the destruction in the Podolsky district of Kiev.

Baulina previously worked for fashion and lifestyle magazines, such as Time Out Moscow, before becoming a social activist and joining the Alexei Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation. She was, among other things, the editor of Navalny’s YouTube channel and was even arrested in a raid by the security forces of the organization’s headquarters.

After the fund was outlawed, Baulina moved to Ukraine and Poland and returned to journalistic work. One of the projects in which she has been involved in recent years is Koda’s Generation Gulag, an initiative of 12 videos of oral history about Soviet crimes in the wake of the Putin regime’s attempts to “rewrite history.”

The news of Baulina’s death shocked her colleagues. “Oksana was funny, committed to the goal and extremely brave,” said Sean Walker of the Guardian. “She built a new life in Warsaw after being forced to flee Russia due to ties to Navalny and was determined to make an important press. Another victim of this irrational and horrible mess.”
