Northeast Asian History Foundation John Thompson’s ‘World Waterway Map’ released… Until February 28th
It has been confirmed that the East Sea was marked as the ‘Gulf of Corea’ on a world map containing major shipping routes by a British mapping company in the 1810s.
The Northeast Asian History Foundation (Chairman Park Ji-hyang) announced on the 8th that it will unveil the ‘World Waterway Chart’ created in 1817 by the British mapping company John Thompson at the Dokdo Experience Center in Times Square, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.
The ‘World Waterway Map’ is a map showing the world’s major sea routes. This map was published in ‘A New general atlas’ published by John Thompson.
The map shows a line passing through the East Sea and marks it as the ‘Gulf of Corea.’ In addition, the name of the country of Joseon and the Strait of Korea were also specified as ‘Corea’ and ‘Str. of Corea’.
The foundation explained that this shows that the waters of the East Sea were recognized as Korean seas. Against this background, it is the result of explorer La Perouse’s circumnavigation of the world from 1785 to 1788 at the order of King Louis XVI of France.
This exhibition runs until February 28th.
