The program described the incident as “horrific” and constitutes a serious threat to the lives of its employees, while the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs warned that the efforts of relief organizations To save lives in the Gaza Strip, which is on the verge of collapse.
He said in a press statement, “The convoy, consisting of three cars carrying eight employees, was hit by a barrage of bullets near the Wadi Gaza checkpoint.”
In its statement, the program was surprised that the convoy was exposed to fire, even though it bore clear signs indicating that it belonged to it and had obtained all necessary permits from the Israeli authorities.
The statement indicated that “the attack caused severe damage to the cars, which were hit by at least 16 bullets,” but stressed that “the employees were not harmed.”
The program described the incident as “terrifying” and highlights the dangerous and complex conditions in which humanitarian organizations operate in Gaza.
The program called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, ensure the protection of civilians, and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid necessary to save lives.
In turn, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, warned that the efforts of relief organizations to save lives in the Gaza Strip are on the verge of collapse.
Fletcher said, “Six fuel tanks that entered from the Kerem Shalom crossing were looted, leaving us with only a little fuel for relief operations,” stressing that “humanitarian efforts in Gaza are facing increasing obstacles.”
The UN official pointed out that “Israeli soldiers fired more than 16 bullets at a UN convoy at the checkpoint between the southern and northern Gaza Strip” and that “an Israeli raid targeted a vehicle belonging to the local community on Friday night that was protecting part of a UN aid convoy.”
Fletcher considered that “the Israeli forces are unable or unwilling to guarantee the safety of our convoys in the Gaza Strip,” noting that “the United Nations mission in Jabalia confronted Israeli soldiers who threatened critically ill patients and arrested 4 of them.”
Fletcher called on member states of the United Nations to “protect all civilians and all humanitarian operations in Gaza,” noting that the residents of the Strip have endured more than 14 months of displacement, shocks, the destruction of schools, hospitals, civilian infrastructure, and famine.
The Israeli forces have continued their war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, resulting in the killing of 45,854 citizens, the majority of whom were women and children, and the injury of 109,139 others, according to the latest statistics of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Strip.
