Venezuela breaks diplomatic relations with Paraguay

Through a statement, the Government of Venezuela announced the breaking of diplomatic relations with Paraguay. This comes after the statements of President Santiago Peña in favor of Edmundo González Urrutia.

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has decided, in full exercise of its sovereignty, break diplomatic relations with the Republic of Paraguay and proceed with the immediate withdrawal of its diplomatic personnel accredited in the country,” indicated the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.

Let us remember that recently, Edmundo González held a video call with the president of Paraguay, Santiago Pena. After the meeting, the president endorsed Urrutia as the legitimate winner of the Venezuelan presidential elections.

“I reaffirmed my support for democracy the victory of González Urrutia as presidentremembering that independent international analyzes of the electoral process and the vote count confirmed his broad victory in the presidential elections last July,” Peña published through his X account.

These statements were not well received by the Venezuelan government. After that, the government of Paraguay was branded as a “subordinated to the interests of foreign powerspromoting agendas aimed at undermining democratic principles.”

New breakdown of relations for Venezuela

This is not the first break in diplomatic relations due to what happened in their presidential elections. Previously, the foreign ministry expelled officials from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

After the breaking of relations with Venezuela, the account of the presidency of Paraguay recognized Edmundo González as president. He also gave him a deadline of 48 hours to ambassador Ricardo Capella to leave Paraguayan soil and travel back to the Venezuelan country.
