Commander Drapathi admits to AFP that mass desertion occurred
“We will not refute” the report that estimated the number of deserters at 1,750.
The Ukrainian military admitted that its trainees had deserted from a military base in France.
According to AFP, Major General Mikhail Drapati, commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, said on the 6th (local time) regarding deserters who occurred during training in France, “It is true that there is a problem. “We are aware of this,” he admitted.
Regarding the news of desertion known through Ukrainian media, Commander Drapati said, “There were negative aspects that came out in the public domain. He conceded, “There were problems with staffing, training and, in part, the command department.”
The report included that last month, about 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers escaped from the 155th Mechanized Brigade without participating in combat, and that about 50 deserted during training. Of the 2,300 Ukrainian troops trained on French territory, 1,750 (76%) fled.
Regarding this, Commander Drapathi said, “I will not refute it. “Many of the facts presented actually occurred,” he explained, “but may not be on the scale and scope presented.”
Ukraine’s National Investigation Service has been conducting an investigation in the area of desertion and abuse of power by military personnel last week.
A French Army official said, “There was some desertion, but it was very minimal considering the number of people being trained. They had the right to leave the French barracks.”
He said, “Ukrainian soldiers were subject to the disciplinary system imposed by the Ukrainian command,” and “I am not sure what actions can be considered abuse of power.” “In any case, there is nothing known about the fact that Ukrainian troops are stationed in France or what happened during training,” he added.
