At least 19 people were killed during an attack carried out by unknown gunmen on the presidential palace in the Chadian capital, N’Djamena.
Agence France-Presse reported that “an intense exchange of fire in the vicinity of the presidential palace in central N’Djamena began on Wednesday night at around 20:45.” The agency quoted Chadian security sources as saying that “a group of unidentified gunmen attacked the palace.”
The sources confirmed to Agence France-Presse that Chadian security “resisted the attack firmly,” noting that “all roads near the presidential palace were closed, and military equipment, including tanks, appeared in the center of the city, while city residents flocked to The site to organize a rally in support of the President of Chad, Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno.”
According to data issued by the Chadian security services and reported by the agency, “at least 19 people were killed as a result of skirmishes and shooting.”
Later, security sources confirmed that “the situation is under control,” and the incident occurred a few hours before Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was scheduled to begin an official visit to Chad.
