On the night of January 8, the Kristall oil storage facility in Engels, Russia was attacked, resulting in a major fire, various Russian Telegram channels reported.
Saratov region governor Roman Busargin said debris from a Ukrainian drone hit an unidentified “industrial facility” around 5:30 a.m. local time as part of a “massive” drone attack on the city. The Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported, citing reports from residents, that an oil depot in the city caught fire.
There was no information available on the extent of the damage caused. According to Busargin, no one was injured as a result of the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that 11 Ukrainian attack drones were shot down over the Saratov region.
Videos circulating on social media showed a large fire burning at the oil depot. Residents reportedly heard at least five explosions leading up to the fire. Firefighters are at the scene trying to put out the fire, Busargin added.
Engels, located more than 750 kilometers from the nearest border controlled by Ukrainian troops, has previously been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks: the city is home to the Engels-2 airbase. According to media reports, fuel for the air base was stored at the attacked oil depot.
Over the past year, Ukrainian troops have carried out a series of drone strikes aimed at damaging Russia’s oil industry, which is critical to supporting Moscow’s war effort, as well as its military equipment.
As the full-scale Russian invasion continues, Ukraine also continues to attack Russian installations along the Russian-Ukrainian border to damage the country’s military supply chain.
