U.S. authorities make all-out efforts to extinguish five forest fires… Mobilization of military transport aircraft
The number of deaths from wildfires in Los Angeles (LA), USA, has increased to double digits. The bereaved family appears to be in mourning.
The LA County Coroner’s Office issued a press release on the 9th (local time) and announced that it had confirmed 10 deaths related to the wildfires in the LA area that began on the 7th and was in the process of identifying them.
Due to the ongoing wildfires, identification could take several weeks. “We are trying to provide information as quickly as possible, following safety protocols,” the coroner’s office explained.
Although not all have been identified, local media is reporting deaths one after another. CNN reported on this day that 83-year-old man Rodney Nicholson was among the dead in the wildfire.
Nicholson’s body was found in an area devastated by the Eaton Fire. He appears to have suffered the disaster while protecting his home even though his family and neighbors advised him to evacuate.
His daughter, Kimiko Nicholson, said in an interview, “I found my father’s bones. My son and neighbors encouraged me to leave, but my father said it would be okay.”
Another person killed in the area was Anthony Mitchell, who lost his life along with his son Justin. He, who relies on a wheelchair due to leg discomfort, suffered the misfortune along with his son, who has cerebral palsy.
His daughter Hajime White, an Arkansas resident, expressed her feelings to the Washington Post, saying, “My father couldn’t have left his son behind,” and “It’s so hard.”
The LA wildfire, which started in Pacific Palisades on the 7th, is spreading sporadically with the wind and growing in size. There are a total of 5 forest fires currently in progress, with 1 added today.
The largest is the Palisades fire, which has burned an area of 19,978 ac (approximately 80.8 ㎢) to date. The evolution rate has shown some progress from 0% to the current 6%.
The Eaton wildfire, the second largest, spread to a width of 13,690ac (about 55.4㎢). In the case of the Eaton forest fire, the extinguishment rate is still 0%, and 5 people have died so far in this incident alone.
In the case of the Hearst forest fire, it spread to 771ac (3.1㎢) and was extinguished by about 37%. The Sunset forest fire, which started relatively late, is rather small, with an area of 60ac (0.2㎢).
In the case of the Lydia forest fire, it covers an area of 348ac (1.4㎢) and was extinguished by about 60% after the fire authorities worked through the night. In addition, the new Kenneth Forest Fire that broke out today is 960ac (3.9㎢) in size.
Among the existing forest fires, the Olivias and Woodley Sunset forest fires were extinguished side by side. To date, in Los Angeles, evacuation orders have been issued for 180,000 residents in the area affected by the wildfire.
Firefighting authorities are fighting hard to extinguish the flames, but are experiencing difficulties such as strong dry winds and incidents where firefighting aircraft collide with drones during rescue operations.
The U.S. Northern Command announced on this day that it mobilized a C-130 military transport aircraft to extinguish the LA forest fire. It is known that there were more than 6,500 damages to structures, including houses, due to forest fires.
