“We ⁢heard a loud crash, a big bang”: Two trams collided violently in ‌a tunnel at Strasbourg’s main ‍train station, injuring dozens, though fortunately, ⁤none are reported to be in critical condition. The cause of the accident remains⁤ under investigation.

In a ‍dramatic incident at the Strasbourg train station, two trams collided,‍ resulting in numerous injuries. Authorities confirmed ⁢that while dozens where hurt, none ‌of the injuries ⁤were life-threatening. The collision occurred with meaningful force in a tunnel beneath the station, and ⁤the exact cause is still being steadfast.

Strasbourg’s Mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, described the ⁣crash as a “brutal collision” and rushed to the‍ scene. Initial reports from the prefecture estimated 30 ‍to⁢ 35 injuries, while firefighters reported⁢ around 50. Earlier estimates had suggested‍ at least 20 injuries.

Emergency services cordoned ⁤off the station entrance, with ⁢ambulances stationed in the restricted area. Some injured individuals were carried to ambulances, while others received treatment on-site. Eyewitness ⁣footage⁤ revealed ‍the trams severely damaged, with one appearing to have derailed.

The public prosecutor has launched‍ an investigation into the accident’s cause. Patrick Maciejewski, president of the Strasbourg transport company ⁣CTS, noted that traffic disruptions due to ⁤multiple demonstrations earlier in the day had necessitated ⁢changes ‌to tram schedules.

According to Maciejewski, one tram had braked before‌ the collision and began moving backward. An eyewitness told AFP that the tram⁣ was reversing at full speed, stating, “There was a problem ⁢with⁢ the brakes. We heard a strong impact,a big bang.”
