Strasbourg’s Mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, described the crash as a “brutal collision” and rushed to the scene. Initial reports from the prefecture estimated 30 to 35 injuries, while firefighters reported around 50. Earlier estimates had suggested at least 20 injuries.
Emergency services cordoned off the station entrance, with ambulances stationed in the restricted area. Some injured individuals were carried to ambulances, while others received treatment on-site. Eyewitness footage revealed the trams severely damaged, with one appearing to have derailed.
The public prosecutor has launched an investigation into the accident’s cause. Patrick Maciejewski, president of the Strasbourg transport company CTS, noted that traffic disruptions due to multiple demonstrations earlier in the day had necessitated changes to tram schedules.
According to Maciejewski, one tram had braked before the collision and began moving backward. An eyewitness told AFP that the tram was reversing at full speed, stating, “There was a problem with the brakes. We heard a strong impact,a big bang.”
