Hariharan (27) has been arrested in Virudhunagar for cheating on a 22-year-old girl, sexually abusing her and filming it on his cell phone. Also, police arrested Junath Ahmed (27), Matasami and Praveen, a friend of Harihar’s DMK youth ward organizer, who had allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, threatening to post the video on social media.
The incident has shaken Tamil Nadu like the Pollachi sex case. They were also produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and admitted to the Government Home in Madurai. All four, including Hariharan, were lodged in a branch jail in Srivilliputhur.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Stalin said, “A case of sexual harassment of a teenager in Virudhunagar is being investigated. Within 24 hours of receiving the complaint, four persons have been arrested and remanded in custody. The police have registered a case against those involved under various sections and appropriate action will be taken in this case.” Such incidents will be monitored to prevent them from happening again. Unlike the Pollachi incident and the Washermenpet incident in Chennai, justice will be served in the Virudhunagar incident and all those involved in the incident will be given due punishment. The case is being transferred to the CPCID. “
He further said that the case has been transferred to the CPCID so that the culprits can be punished speedily. The CBCID Superintendent of Police has been appointed as the Special Officer to investigate the case. The chargesheet will be filed within 60 days and the case will be taken to a separate court. More offenders will be punished in a hurry. Chief Minister MK Stalin said the maximum sentence would be imposed. He said Virudhunagar would be a role model not only for Tamil Nadu but for India as a whole in speedy sentencing in the sex case. He said it would be a lesson to those who make mistakes like this and wait and see.
