1 of this year. In January, Latvia took over the presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers for a year. One of its priority directions will be combating disinformation and strengthening public resilience. To a large extent, it affects the education system – raising patriotism, learning cyber security and media literacy, the ability to protect oneself and others in the event of a crisis.

Strengthening media literacy

The increasing entry of digital content and artificial intelligence (AI) into all areas, including education, requires new approaches and skills. In the introduction of the new competency-based curriculum, critical thinking, problem-solving and civic participation, cyber security and media literacy issues are emphasized. Previously, they were not given much attention in the curriculum, especially for secondary school students, said Silvija Amatniece (JV), parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) at the meeting of the Baltic affairs subcommittee of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Commission.
