The city, which has been besieged by fire since Tuesday, continues to count casualties, with 24 dead recorded as of Sunday afternoon, a toll that could rise, according to authorities.
The Los Angeles County coroner published a list of the victims, eight who died as a result of the Pacific Palisades fire and 16 as a result of the Eaton fire.
Diane Criswell of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warned Sunday that “the situation remains critical.”
She said in statements to ABC that “the winds are likely to become dangerous again,” and she urged people to be vigilant.
After a brief reduction in wind intensity, authorities expected them to return strongly on Monday.
“These winds combined with dry weather will keep the fire threat in the Los Angeles area at a high level,” said Anthony Marrone, the district’s fire chief.
Despite the efforts of thousands of firefighters to contain the flames, the Pacific Palisades fire on Saturday spread to northwest Los Angeles, threatening the densely populated San Fernando Valley as well as the Getty Museum and its valuable works of art.
The fires destroyed entire parts of America’s second largest city, destroying “more than 12 thousand” facilities, a number that includes buildings as well as cars, as the authorities explained on Saturday.
