Decided by vote of 2,244 delegates… Interested in Lee Ki-heung’s third term?
The election for the 42nd President of the Korea Sports Council has begun. The six candidates challenging the ‘Sports President’ appealed for support from voting delegates.
The election for the 42nd President of the Korea Sports Council began at 1 p.m. on the 14th at the Olympic Hall in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul.
This election was contested by six candidates, the largest number ever. Current President of the Korea Sports Council Lee Ki-heung, former Secretary-General of the Gangwon Province Sports Council Kim Yong-ju, former Korea Table Tennis Association President Yoo Seung-min, Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council President Kang Tae-sun, former Korea Sepak Takraw Association President Oh Joo-young, and Dankook University Professor Emeritus Kang Shin-wook are running for office, recording a competition rate of 6 to 1.
With current Chairman Lee Ki-heung, who is under investigation for alleged misconduct, running for a third term, there was concern about whether the ‘anti-Lee Ki-heung’ side would unify, but as differences of opinion emerged among the candidates, a six-way election was held.
There was a risk that this sports president election would be halted due to a provisional injunction filed by some delegates and candidates to the court to stop the election. Some candidates and delegates filed an application for a temporary injunction, objecting to procedural issues in the composition of the electoral college and the election method, but the court dismissed it and voting proceeded normally.
Election Commission Chairman Kim Dae-nyeon said, “We operated this election strictly to ensure that it was held fairly and transparently. “In the Korean Sports Council President election, the number of voters has been expanded according to the regulations, and the representativeness of the Sports Council President has been strengthened,” he said.
In the announcement of their opinions ahead of the vote, the six candidates appealed for support by appealing to their respective strengths.
Candidate Lee Ki-heung, who has recently been investigated for alleged misconduct and faces a ‘judicial risk,’ said, “I have been under a lot of investigation, but I have done my work in compliance with the laws and regulations,” and added, “I would like to say again that there are no problems. “If you are given the opportunity to work again, I will do a good job based on my past experience and experience,” he said.
Candidate Kim Yong-ju said, “Please give a chance to a candidate who is an athlete to the core,” and added, “A candidate tainted by corruption and someone with no experience in administration should not be given an important position.”
Candidate Yoo Seung-min said, “I said it would change during the second term of the popular election, but there was no change,” and “I will bring hope and change.” “The sports association must change now,” he said.
Candidate Kang Tae-seon, a former businessman, said, “I was shocked to hear the news that the Korea Sports Council was searched and seized,” and argued, “A transparent and trustworthy person should become the president of the Korea Sports Council.”
Candidate Oh Joo-young said, “The Korean Sports Council needs reform. He said, “I am the right person because I don’t owe anything to sports,” and candidate Kang Shin-wook also said, “The sports world went through a difficult time during the eight years of President Lee Ki-heung’s regime. We really need to change now. “Please support a clean candidate,” he said.
In today’s election, the winner will be determined by the decisions of a total of 2,244 voters over 150 minutes. The term of office of the 42nd President of the Korea Sports Council runs until February 2029.
During his term, major international events will be held, such as the 2026 Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics, the 2026 Aichi/Nagoya Asian Games, and the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Summer Olympics.
