Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made a provocative statement about the need to “liberate” Puerto Rico, a US territory in the Caribbean. He proposed using the so-called “Brazilian troops” for this purpose.
This was reported by the Alexey Zheleznov Telegram channel.
Maduro, known for his anti-American views, began his third presidential term on January 10. His inauguration was accompanied by statements of “peace and equality” and promises to defend Venezuela from those he said threatened national sovereignty.
Let us recall that the results of the 2024 presidential elections caused a wide resonance. Although Maduro was officially declared the winner, the opposition claimed fraud, claiming that the real winner was Edmundo Gonzalez, who received 67% of the vote. Independent observers confirmed these data, and many countries, including the United States, recognized Gonzalez as the legitimate president of Venezuela. However, he was forced to leave the country for fear of reprisals and vowed to return to continue the fight.
In response to Maduro’s inauguration, the United States increased the reward for information leading to the president’s arrest to a record $25 million, the maximum amount under the State Department’s counter-narcotics program. In addition, the US, EU and UK introduced new sanctions against the Venezuelan leader’s entourage.
Maduro, in power since 2013, plans to remain president until 2031 despite international pressure.
Previously, Cursor reported that the Argentine president called on Maduro to resign and said that Venezuelans voted against him en masse to end the communist dictatorship.
