Refugee crisis: “A precedent has been set”

Migration researcher Rainer Bauböck demands that the costs for the integration of Ukrainian refugees have to be shared between the EU member states. And: He believes that Europe will have to provide temporary protection again in the next flight crisis.

Die Presse: The EU Commission estimates that four million refugees could come from Ukraine, the migration researcher Gerald Knaus estimates up to ten million. Where do you base your estimates?

Rainer Bauböck: That depends on the course of the war. If Putin succeeds in installing a dictatorship in Ukraine like the one in Belarus, it could well be that a quarter of the 40 million inhabitants see no other perspective than to flee.
