Brooks is often seen tweeting about various things he found in older versions of Windows, including Easter Eggs. And recently, he discovered a never-before-seen secret of Windows 1.0 RTM (RTM stands for “production release“). The list of credits, along with the names of everyone who helped create Windows 1.0, can be found hidden in the bitmap file.
It should be noted that by hiding this already encrypted data in the bitmap file, the developers were preventing anyone at the time from discovering the secret credits. In fact, according to Brooks, the tools needed to extract the bitmap file from NE (New can be used file format) when Windows version 1.0. And even if someone could extract the bitmap, they wouldn’t be able to detect the extra stuff, Encrypted data hidden in the file.
Although Brooks was able to piece the secret together, unveiling the credits list in the process, they still haven’t figured out how to actually access the Easter egg in Windows 1.0 without hacking. It is believed that there is a series of keystrokes in Windows 1.0 that will open the secret credit menu. This is how it works in all newer versions which also contains hidden credits and similar secrets. But until now, no one has been able to find out.
You may recognize one of the names in the newly discovered credits. Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve It’s included in the Easter egg and that’s because… he was working on it. He left Microsoft in 1996 with Mike Harrington to create Valve and begin work on their first game, half life. I wonder how all this happened…
